Green Card Visa

The Rules And Regulations Of A Green Card Visa

Green Card Visa

There are many people that have a green card visa in order to live, or work, at least on a temporary if not permanent bases in the United States.  For those people that carry the green card visa, they often have many questions as to whether they can leave the country and reenter without any problem.  Even though it is best to consult with an attorney whenever you are up against serious questions like this, here is a general FAQ to help you to be able to know a little bit more about your standing as a holder of a green card visa.

If you plan on traveling outside of the United States for an extended period of time, you may have a little bit of a difficulty getting back in.  Even though if you leave for only several months you will generally not have a problem reentering the United States, you also want to make sure that you are not making yourself too noticeable whenever you cross the border.  The most difficult part about leaving the country whenever you have a green card visa for an extended period of time is to prove the fact that you are in fact a permanent resident within the United States.  Just make sure that you do not stay outside of the United States for more than a year as your green card visa may automatically be revoked at that point.

If you stay outside of the United States for more than a year and you have a green card visa (which might lead to a green card marriage!), you may have to re-apply for entry into the United States.  There are certain forms that you will need to fill out in order to reenter the United States in this way.  These renewals are good for a two-year period but depending on the timing of your coming and going, you may not have to reapply for quite some time.  If you lost your green card visa because you stayed outside of the United States for too long, you may have a bit of a difficult time regaining the status.  At this point, I would consult with immigration attorney in order to make sure that you fill out the proper papers so that you do not lose your ability to travel inside the United States permanently.Once you acquire your green card, depending on your circumstances, it can be valid for up to two years.  Some of the determining factors for how long your green card is valid is if you were married whenever you obtained your green card or if you are single.  Another interesting thing about holding a green card is that if there were a draft in the United States you may be called up for military service.  At this particular time, however, that is not an issue as there is not a forced draft in the United States.  Just make sure that you register with the selective service if you are between the ages of 18 and 26 in order to be compliant with the entire immigration system.
